Why Are Redwood Trees So Tall?

Coastal redwoods are the tallest living things on Earth, reaching heights of more than 370 feet. Walking through a redwood forest can make people feel tiny as these incredible trees tower overhead.

Although they are often confused with giant sequoias, coastal redwoods are a different kind of tree. Both are coniferous trees that grow in California and can live for more than 2,000 years, but coastal redwoods grow taller while giant sequoias grow wider.

The question is, how can a tree grow as tall as the Statue of Liberty and even taller? God’s design provides several amazing answers.

How Do Redwood Trees Get Enough Water?

Like other plants, redwoods need water to survive and grow.

Their roots absorb water from the ground, and God designed an incredible system of tubes inside the tree to move hundreds of gallons of water every day through the roots, trunk, and branches.

But redwoods have another remarkable way to collect water. They also absorb moisture from fog through their leaves. Since coastal redwoods grow where fog is common, they can gather water high in the canopy, where it is needed.

This unique design helps support the tremendous height of these giant trees.

Why Don’t Redwood Trees Fall Over?

One surprising fact about redwoods is that they do not have especially deep roots.

Instead of spending energy growing deep underground, redwoods invest that energy in growing taller. Their roots stay relatively shallow, but they spread outward and wrap around the roots of neighboring redwood trees.
