Why Can’t Cheetahs Roar?

At first glance, a cheetah seems like it should be a “big cat.” It is much larger than a house cat and is one of the world’s most famous predators. But scientists group cats in part by whether they can roar.

The cats that can roar belong to the genus Panthera. This group includes lions, tigers, leopards, panthers, and snow leopards. Cheetahs are not part of this group because they cannot roar.

Instead, cheetahs belong to a different cat subfamily called Felinae. This group includes many smaller wild cats, domestic cats, and a few larger cats such as cheetahs and cougars.

How Do Cheetahs Communicate?

Even though cheetahs cannot roar, they have many ways to communicate.

Cheetahs can purr, chirp, hiss, growl, and meow. These sounds allow them to communicate with other cheetahs without needing the powerful roar of a lion or tiger. God designed each kind of cat with the communication methods it needs.

Not being able to roar does not hold a cheetah back. Instead, it uses the unique sounds God gave it to interact with other cheetahs.

What Makes Cheetahs Different From Other Cats?

Cheetahs have several features that make them unlike any other cat.

They even have their own genus called Acinonyx, a name that means “thorn claw.” Unlike other cats, a cheetah’s claws do not fully retract into its paws. Instead, they stay partly extended, almost like the spikes on a pair of athletic cleats.

These semi-retractable claws help give cheetahs traction when they sprint and make quick turns at high speeds. This unique feature is one of many ways God designed cheetahs for life on the African savannah.

Why Did God Design Cheetahs This Way?

Every part of a cheetah’s design has a purpose.

Instead of giving cheetahs the ability to roar, God equipped them with other ways to communicate. He also designed them with specialized claws, remarkable speed, and many other features that help them thrive.

Cheetahs remind us that God’s creatures do not all work the same way. Lions roar. Tigers roar. Cheetahs do not. Yet each animal displays the wisdom and creativity of its Creator in its own unique way.

The next time you see a cheetah, remember that although it cannot roar like a lion, it is wonderfully designed with its own special abilities. From its unique vocalizations to its remarkable features, every part of the cheetah points us to the wisdom of the God who made it.
